At the Nancy University of Technology, the timetables are on the Internet

In order to manage on a daily basis the timetables of professors and students whilst still taking into account the various logistical constraints, the IT department and the Planning Administrator at the Nancy University of Technology called upon the services of ADESOFTware.

ADE PRO Intranet, a solution for a real timetabling "headache"

« In further education, finally being able to set timetables relieves a real headache » explains Didier Fradet, Studies Director in the Telecommunications Network Engineering departement at the Nancy-Brabois University of Techonlogy. This department, with 160 students, 15 full time professors and 10 part time, despite it's relatively modest size, performs a diverse range of activities. This variety, coupled with their needs for specific technical resources and the need to share rooms with other departments makes constructing timetables a very difficult task.

« We need to take into account the constraints of room occupation, but in addition the availability of professors, and when they are away doing external research work as is often the case, construction of timetables becomes a laborious task and there are inevitably errors. »

Previously, timetables were constructed « by hand » ; a lot of time was devoted for a result that was often not satisfactory, with many errors : for example, two classes sometimes booked in the same room or a professor timetabled to teach two different courses at the same time. Pedagogical policies for linking courses could simply not be respected.

For this reason, in 1996, the Nancy University of Technology called upon ADESOFTware to help them solve this problem.

Since the implementation of ADE PRO Intranet, timetables are set without errors, with the constraints respected, and are still constructed much faster. There are a lot less « holes » in the timetables for both professors and students. Pedagogical policies can and have been implemented so that theoretical courses always take place before practical work.

Result: A better diffusion of timetables and a number of other savingsThe implementation of the Intranet version allows professors, as well as students, to consult their timetables from a distance and at any time using Web navigators and even interactive terminals present throughout the establishment. This development has seriously improved internal communication.

The purchase of this software has lead to numerous savings : there is less equipment to buy because it is now possible for the University to share its equipment with other university departments, and in addition the availability of professors and rooms is optimized.
